CD Baby

Latest update: 14 November 2017 at 5 pm GMT

At the beginning of November 2017 I joined the CD baby web site.  This post is going to be about my progress as I use this company.

Digital Music Distribution

This link is a related article about Digital Music Distribution

CD Baby

This is one of the companies that are used for uploading and selling music on the Internet.

Bank Payment or Pay Pal

The first problem I had, was putting in my bank details.  I gave up in the end and opted for Pay Pal.  You would think it would be easy to enter an account number and sort code.  But somehow CD baby have made it impossibly difficult.  They charge $2 for using Pay Pal.

Cover Photo

I read through their information and saw that the cover photo should be 3000 pixels square.  Record Union ask for a cover photo of 1600 pixels square.

6 November 2017

I sent a message asking CD baby if I could use my photos of 1600 pixels.

7 November 2017, 1030 GMT

No reply yet!  So I decided to update my profile.  I can't update my profile because I haven't uploaded any music!

Things Can Only Get Better

Maybe they will reply and I'll get started.  So far I'm not impressed!

CD Baby Support

I Just clicked on the support button on their site, and typed "cover photo" and this is what it says:

How can I re-size my art to the required minimum of 1400 x 1400 pixel dimensions?
Most often if you are having trouble uploading to us it's because the artwork is not an exact square or is not the right pixel size. We do require that images are a minimum of 1400 x 1400 pixels square; and a maximum of 5000 x 5000 pixels.

Poke and Hope

Its always the same with everything.  Poke around and eventually you find the answer!

8 November 2017

Last night I uploaded "Morning Song" to the CD baby music store.  It cost absolutely nothing as I already had the UPC number (UPC would only cost $5).

CD Baby Profile

I got an email this morning and I think everything is ok and I was able to edit my profile.

Morning Song

If all goes according to plan, this song will be on the CD baby store on 14 November 2017.

9 November 2017

I got a reply to my enquiry about the cover photos:

Thanks for getting in touch with us.
Cover art must be:

1400 x 1400 pixels minimum
JPG file type
72 - 300dpi (300dpi is the best)
Less than 25mb
RGB color scheme (not CMYK)

It was sent at 1047 pm GMT on 8 November. So that's about 2 days since my enquiry.

Dots Per Inch

I looked up dpi on Google.  So it looks like my 1600 pixel photos are ok.

Morning Song On CD Baby Store

Today 14 November 2017 I got an email to say that the song is on site.

CD Baby Profile

My profile is:  CD baby Profile where you can find "Morning Song".

Tomorrow Never Dies

In the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies, there was a quote about a computer program full of bugs, so that people would have to keep updating the software continually.

I wonder what company was on the mind of the script writer?

I have written about Radio Airplay.  So I had to make a slight change to my article about Record Union.

Radio Airplay

Radio Airplay is one of the services offered on the Record Union web site.

Jango Internet Radio

When you upload songs onto Radio Airplay, they end up on Jango Radio.

Uploading Music

It is not enough to just upload music onto Radio Airplay!  You have to search through every menu and add other musicians to your station and get everything right.

My Mistake

I uploaded my songs and nobody listened!  Then I searched through all the menus and sorted things out.  Then suddenly people started listening!

CD Baby

CD baby is another web site for uploading to the Internet, similar to Record Union.  They also use Radio Airplay and Jango.  I mention this because CD baby is labeled as one of the selling sites on my profile of Radio Airplay.

Using Radio Airplay

If you decide to use Radio Airplay, it needs to be set up properly!  Otherwise nobody will listen!  The cost is about $50 every 6 months.

Expect to be spammed very often, with offers of competitions and promotions.  None of them are free!

Singer Songwriter

In todays market, songwriters usually have to perform their own songs, because most singers have been advised to write their own songs.  In my opinion, music was better when songwriters wrote and singers sang!

Writing a Song

This is very difficult!   Apart from creating an original melody, you need some good lyrics and a good musical arrangement.  This takes up a lot of time, because you have to practice continually until everything sounds right.

Musical Performance

Now that you think the song is right you either have to record it, or perform in public.

In the Studio

Unless you want a mediocre recording, you will have to go into a recording studio.

More to Learn About Music

So you learned how to sing, you've learned about music, you've learned how to write a song and perform in public.  Now you have to learn about the recording studio.

The Music Producer

In the studio there will be at least one person and they usually call themselves a "Music Producer".  Their job is to record your song and offer advice about the recording.  It is your job to tell them what you want and decide what the final recording sounds like.

We've all heard that there is no substitute for experience, but you will have to learn how to get the most out of the studio and get on with the producer.

A New Skill

Even if you use home recording equipment, you will one day, probably need to go into a proper studio.  This is a new skill that needs to be learned.

Choosing a Recording Studio

The studios that I have used cost between £30 to £60 an hour.  They all had a large mixing desk and used Cubase as the main computer program.

Choosing a Music Producer

I have worked with 3 producers so far and they all have similar ideas.  I found the best approach was to find out how they usually record a song and work with them until it sounds right.  If you try to change their ideas, it will take up a lot of studio time.  So finding a suitable producer is essential and once you find them, stick with them.

The Complete Singer Songwriter

When you have your record and its either on the Internet or in the shops, you will most probably have to perform in public.

Public Performance

In the studio, mistakes will cost you time and money.  A public performance is different.  Everybody makes mistakes, even me.  Learning how to cover up your mistakes is the key to performing in public.  Many good performers can make the most out of a mistake, simply by force of personality.  Or put another way, simply make a joke of their mistake and get the audience on their side.

Another Skill

Performing in public is another skill that needs to be learned.  If you become a big star, you will have to give interviews.  In my opinion, there is too much to learn and I still believe that singers should sing and writers should write, and some of the other jobs need to be delegated too.

Digital Music Distribution: CD Baby vs. Tunecore vs. Onerpm vs. DistroKid - 2015

The videos below are about comparing some of the music services which are used for uploading to the major Internet sites, such as iTunes and Spotify etc.

Music Upload Sites

So far, I have been using Record Union, but there are other sites which upload songs.   The ones that I have recently discovered are CD baby, One rpm, Distro Kid, Reverb Nation and Tune Core.

Take Me

One of my songs "Take Me" was uploaded to Record Union on 23 September 2017.  When I looked for it on Saturday 20 October 2017 on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play and Amazon, it wasn't there.

Contact Record Union

So I sent them a message and had to wait until Monday 23 October 2017.

Universal Product Code (UPC)

On the Monday I got an email telling me where to get the UPC.  Eventually, I found out that you have to look for the UPC number and tell them.  Otherwise they can't find the song.

Record Union are looking into the problem

Now that they have the name of the song and its UPC number, they are looking into the problem.

Eight out of Nine

Of the 9 songs that I have uploaded, they managed to get 8 of them onto the music sites.

Update about my Song

The problem was resolved on 26 October 2017.  Record Union sent me this link Take Me on Spotify

 Other Internet Sites

I have also seen the song on Google Play and iTunes.  So it only took them a month to upload the song.  But I shall watch carefully in future.
